Public, resort, and private masterpieces in one blended ranking - every course tagged by how (or whether) you can actually play it.

Florida has more golf than anywhere in America - around 1,100 courses - and its top end splits three ways: a golden-age private aristocracy around Jupiter and Palm Beach, a stadium showpiece the whole world watches every March, and a modern sand-country resort scene in the middle of the state that changed what Florida golf could look like. Most rankings split those worlds apart. This list puts them back together - one blended top 20, ordered by course quality, with every entry tagged so you know exactly where you stand.
How we ranked: we cross-referenced the state lists from Golf Digest, Golfweek, and GOLF Magazine, then applied our own weighting of architecture, setting, conditioning, and championship history. The top is unusually settled: all three panels put Seminole first and the Sawgrass Stadium Course second, so we do too - and Sawgrass sits in our national top 10, so its place here mirrors its place there. Where the panels split further down, we made the call - and said why.

#1
Seminole Golf Club
Private
Juno Beach - Donald Ross (1929)
The consensus No. 1 course in Florida on every major panel - Golf Digest has ranked Seminole first in the state since 1985, and GOLF Magazine puts it first too. Ross routed the course in 1929 along and between two dune ridges hard by the Atlantic, so almost every hole meets the wind from a new direction. Ben Hogan called it the one course he could happily play every day, the 2021 Walker Cup showed off its firm, fast surfaces, and the closing three holes are among the finest finishes in American golf.
#2
TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course)
Resort
Ponte Vedra Beach - Pete Dye (1980) - Green fee $750
The highest-ranked Florida course anyone can book, and No. 2 on both the Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine state lists. Dye conjured the Stadium Course out of flat swampland in 1980 and gave it the most famous finish in tour golf: the reachable par-5 16th, the island-green 17th, and a closing par 4 with water down the entire left side. Home of THE PLAYERS Championship since 1982 - and at $750 peak it is a splurge that delivers the full championship production. Read our full course review.
#3
Streamsong Red
Resort
Bowling Green - Coore & Crenshaw (2013)
Golfweek ranks the Red the No. 2 public-access course in Florida, behind only Sawgrass, and GOLF Magazine puts it third in the state overall. Coore and Crenshaw shaped it from the heaving sand of a reclaimed phosphate mine - wide fairways, ground-game options almost unheard of in Florida, and a dramatic par-3 16th over water to a green some 70 yards deep. Walking-first, no houses, no palm-tree postcard golf: this is a links that happens to sit in Central Florida.
#4
Calusa Pines Golf Club
Private
Naples - Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry (2001)
Golf Digest ranks Calusa Pines third in Florida and inside the national top 70; GOLF Magazine has it in the state top six. Hurdzan and Fry took a dead-flat Naples site in 2001 and built ridgelines up to 58 feet high from the lakes they dug, planting them with mature oaks and pines. The result plays firm and fast, rivals Streamsong for the fastest turf in the state, has no homes and no tee times - just a pure golf club with a celebrated caddie program.
#5
Streamsong Blue
Resort
Bowling Green - Tom Doak (2013)
Doak built the Blue alongside the Red - the two routings actually intertwine - and panelists have argued the sibling order ever since: Golfweek goes Red, Blue, Black, in that order. The Blue plays wider off the tee than the Red, then asks harder questions the closer you get, with boldly contoured greens and a closing pair, the par-5 17th and the long par-4 18th, that rank among the sternest finishes Doak has built. Book both on the same trip and pick your own winner.
#6
McArthur Golf Club
Private
Hobe Sound - Tom Fazio and Nick Price (2002)
Hobe Sound is Florida golf in microcosm - a small coastal town stacked with elite clubs - and McArthur may be its purest golf-only address: no tee times, no pool, no tennis, just the course Fazio and Price built in 2002 through pines and sand hills beside the Medalist. GOLF Magazine rates its two nines so highly it ranked both inside its Florida top 10, and Golf Digest keeps the club on its Second 100 Greatest list. Quiet, exacting, and entirely about the golf.
#7
Mountain Lake
Private
Lake Wales - Seth Raynor (1917)
The oldest course on this list and its great classic surprise. Raynor laid out Mountain Lake in 1917 in the rolling lake country of Central Florida - genuine elevation, template holes, and a private colony setting that feels a world away from the flat, watery Florida stereotype. GOLF Magazine ranks it seventh in the state, Golfweek has it fifth among Florida privates, and a Tyler Rae restoration is returning the course to its 1917 roots.
#8
The Concession Golf Club
Private
Bradenton - Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin (2006)
Named for the most famous act of sportsmanship in Ryder Cup history - Nicklaus conceding Jacklin a short putt to halve the 1969 matches - and co-designed by the two men themselves. Golf Digest named it America's Best New Private Course of 2006, Golf Digest has ranked it as high as fourth in Florida, and in 2021 it stepped in to host a World Golf Championships event on short notice. Small greens, bold bunkering, and live-oak country on the Gulf side of the state.
#9
Jupiter Hills Club (Hills Course)
Private
Tequesta - George Fazio (1970)
George Fazio blended the two courses he knew best - Pine Valley and Merion, where he had lost a U.S. Open playoff - into the Hills Course in 1970, routing it along a prominent sand ridge with elevation change almost unheard of in South Florida. His nephew Tom Fazio later restored the original Pine Valley character. Every panel puts the Hills in the Florida top 10, and the club hosted the 2018 U.S. Mid-Amateur on a layout that still feels like a hidden championship test.
#10
Streamsong Black
Resort
Bowling Green - Gil Hanse (2017)
Hanse's 2017 addition completed the Streamsong set, and it is the boldest of the three: a par-73 stretched across some 300 acres, with enormous fairways, a punchbowl 9th green, a dual green at the 13th and an infinity green at the 17th. Golfweek ranks it the No. 4 public-access course in Florida. Three architects at the top of the modern game, one resort, three completely different rounds - no other address in American golf offers that.
The Next Ten
Nos. 11-20: still elite company. Five are private clubs, but the five you can book - Cabot Citrus Farms, The Park, Bay Hill, PGA National, and Hammock Beach - include two PGA Tour venues and the best new public course in the South.
#11
Cabot Citrus Farms (Karoo)
Resort
Brooksville - Kyle Franz (2024)
Franz rebuilt the old World Woods Pine Barrens site into an adventure-golf spectacle in 2024 - fairways over 100 yards wide in places, split by sand, with huge double greens. Golf Digest lists it at $430 and GOLF Magazine already ranks it eighth in Florida.
#12
The Park West Palm
Public
West Palm Beach - Gil Hanse (2023)
Hanse and Jim Wagner rebuilt a shuttered municipal course on a sandy ridge in 2023 and gave it back to the public - deep bunkers, a reverse Redan, locals playing from $60, and Golfweek ranking it the No. 5 public-access course in Florida.
#13
Medalist Golf Club
Private
Hobe Sound - Pete Dye and Greg Norman (1995)
Dye and Norman's 1995 test is the home club of a remarkable share of the world's top professionals - a 7,571-yard layout of sand, marsh and Atlantic crosswinds that Bobby Weed restored to its original low-profile character in 2015.
#14
The Bear's Club
Private
Jupiter - Jack Nicklaus (1999)
Nicklaus founded his home club with Barbara in 1999 - first tee shots on New Year's Eve - building a holistic golf environment around a dune ridge, and dozens of tour professionals have made it their base.
#15
Pine Tree Golf Club
Private
Boynton Beach - Dick Wilson (1962)
Wilson's 1962 masterpiece on old dairy farmland - Ben Hogan called it the best course he had ever seen, and generations of elite amateurs have made this walking, golf-only club their winter home.
#16
Black Diamond Ranch (Quarry Course)
Private
Lecanto - Tom Fazio (1987)
Fazio turned abandoned limestone quarries into Florida's most dramatic inland golf in 1987 - holes 13 through 17 play along and over 80-foot quarry walls, a closing stretch unlike anything else in the state.
#17
Isleworth Golf & Country Club
Private
Windermere - Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay (1986)
Palmer and Seay built Isleworth in 1986 on the Butler Chain of Lakes, and Steve Smyers sharpened it in 2005 - a long, water-laced private test long famous as a home base for tour professionals around Orlando.
#18
Bay Hill Club & Lodge
Resort
Orlando - Dick Wilson (1961)
Wilson built the Champion and Challenger nines in 1961; Arnold Palmer fell for the place, bought it, and tinkered for decades. Lodge guests can play the Arnold Palmer Invitational host, finishing at the famous water-guarded par-5 18th.
#19
PGA National (Champion Course)
Resort
Palm Beach Gardens - George and Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus redesign (1981)
Opened in 1981, host of the 1983 Ryder Cup and the 1987 PGA Championship, and reshaped by Nicklaus in 1990 - resort guests get to walk into the Bear Trap, holes 15-17, where water guards every shot.
#20
Hammock Beach Resort (Ocean Course)
Resort
Palm Coast - Jack Nicklaus (2000)
Nicklaus threaded this Palm Coast resort course along the Atlantic in 2000 - one of the few courses in Florida with holes directly on the ocean, a dramatic closing stretch along the beach, and a regular on Golfweek's Florida public-access list.
Honorable Mentions
Indian Creek Country Club, Pablo Creek Club, Isleworth, Lake Nona, Trump National Doral (Blue Monster), Hammock Beach (Ocean Course), Seminole Legacy in Tallahassee, and the Dye Preserve all have genuine claims to a spot - on another panel's ballot, several of them make the cut.
