The Course

Pebble Beach opened in 1919, designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant - two talented amateurs who somehow produced one of the greatest courses ever built on their first try. The course sits on land that was originally slated for coastal real estate, which tells you everything about how California prioritized its shoreline a century ago.

The course has hosted six U.S. Opens (1972, 1982, 1992, 2000, 2010, 2019), with Tiger Woods' 15-shot demolition in 2000 standing as the most dominant major championship performance in history. Jack Nicklaus once said, “If I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play it at Pebble Beach.”

What makes Pebble enduring is not length or trickery - at just over 7,000 yards it is short by modern championship standards. It is the variety: clifftop par 3s, blind shots through cypress trees, and greens so small and sloped that lag putting becomes an extreme sport.

Signature Holes

Hole 7 - Par 3, 106 yards

The shortest hole in championship golf and somehow the scariest. A wedge over a chasm of ocean to a postage stamp green. When the wind blows, pros hit 7-irons.

Hole 8 - Par 4, 427 yards

Nicklaus called the second shot here the greatest in golf - a blind approach over a cliff edge to a green jutting into Carmel Bay. Take one extra club. Then take another.

Hole 18 - Par 5, 543 yards

The most famous finishing hole in golf. A massive dogleg around the bay, with the ocean the entire way. Closing with par here feels like winning.

Worth it?

Yes. It is expensive, the pace can be slow, and the first few holes through the trees are merely very good rather than transcendent. Then you reach the 6th tee, the ocean opens up, and none of that matters. This is the one bucket-list round that actually lives up to the hype.
