The 20 Best Golf Courses in Texas

Public, resort, and private masterpieces in one blended ranking - every course tagged by how (or whether) you can actually play it.

20Courses Ranked

3PGA Tour Venues

Texas golf is two worlds at once: a private-club aristocracy in Dallas, Houston, and Austin that can stand with any state's, and a public-access scene anchored by destination resorts and two of the finest municipal courses in America. Most rankings split the state in two. This list puts it back together - one blended top 20, ordered by course quality, with every entry tagged so you know exactly where you stand.

How we ranked: we cross-referenced the state lists from Golf Digest, Golfweek, and GOLF Magazine, then applied our own weighting of architecture, setting, conditioning, and championship history. Note the honest split at the top: Golf Digest and Golfweek put Whispering Pines first, while GOLF Magazine prefers Trinity Forest. We sided with the majority - and with the course that has held the state's top spot on Golf Digest's ballot since 2013. Where the panels split elsewhere, we made the call - and said why.

#1

Whispering Pines Golf Club

Private
Trinity - Chet Williams (2000)
A green framed by tall East Texas pines and a lake cove at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas

The consensus No. 1 course in Texas. Golf Digest's panel has ranked Whispering Pines first in the state since 2013 and keeps it on the America's 100 Greatest list (No. 66 in 2025-26); Golfweek has it first in Texas too. Chet Williams, a former Nicklaus Design associate, routed the course through towering East Texas pines along the coves at the headwaters of Lake Livingston - no houses, no highways, just corridor after corridor of demanding, tree-lined golf. Three panels look at Texas, and two of them stop right here.

#2

Dallas National Golf Club

Private
Dallas - Tom Fazio (2002)

Fazio found the most dramatic golf land in North Texas - a rugged former quarry property in southwest Dallas with elevation change most Texas courses can only dream of - and built the state's consensus No. 2. Golf Digest has ranked it second in Texas every year since 2005 and holds it inside America's 100 Greatest (No. 96 in 2025-26). The membership is invitation-only, the conditioning is immaculate, and the closing stretch is as stern a finish as Texas offers.

#3

Colonial Country Club

Private
Fort Worth - John Bredemus and Perry Maxwell (1936)

Hogan's Alley. Ben Hogan won here five times, the 1941 U.S. Open put Colonial on the championship map, and the PGA Tour has stopped here every year since 1946 for what is now the Charles Schwab Challenge - one of the longest-running events at a single course on Tour. John Bredemus laid it out in 1936, Perry Maxwell sharpened it, and Gil Hanse's 2023 restoration put the teeth back in, starting with the Horrible Horseshoe: holes 3 through 5, bending along the Trinity River.

#4

Bluejack National

Private
Montgomery - Tiger Woods (2016)

The first American course designed by Tiger Woods, opened in 2016 in the piney woods northwest of Houston. Woods built a playable, strategy-first layout - generous off the tee, exacting around the greens - with a famously relaxed club culture and a 10-hole par-3 course, The Playground, on the side. Golf Digest and Golfweek both put it in the Texas top five; the only live debate is whether it belongs even higher.

#5

Trinity Forest Golf Club

Private
Dallas - Coore & Crenshaw (2016)

The splitter on the panel ballots: GOLF Magazine ranked Trinity Forest No. 1 in Texas outright. Coore and Crenshaw took a former landfill south of downtown Dallas and shaped a firm, fast, links-style test on sandy soil - skyline on the horizon, barely a tree-lined corridor in sight. It hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson in 2018 and 2019 and serves as home to SMU's golf programs. On architecture alone, it has a real claim to the top spot.

#6

Austin Golf Club

Private
Spicewood - Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw (2001)

The design duo's home club - Austin native Ben Crenshaw is a member - and the purest expression of their minimalist philosophy. On Hill Country land west of Austin near Spicewood, Coore and Crenshaw barely moved the earth: holes rest on the ground as if they were always there, the bunkers look centuries old, and the whole round runs at a walker's pace. Both national panels place it in the Texas top 10; it is the insiders' pick for the state's most enjoyable round.

#7

Spanish Oaks Golf Club

Private
Bee Cave - Bobby Weed (2001)

Bobby Weed's Hill Country statement, opened in 2001 in Bee Cave, just west of Austin. Weed routed the course through live oak savanna and limestone creek beds in the Barton Creek watershed, and the design keeps asking the same question in new ways: challenge the creek, or lay back and take the longer road home. Golf Digest ranks it seventh in the state, and Golfweek's panel agrees it belongs in this company.

#8

The Club at Carlton Woods (Nicklaus Course)

Private
The Woodlands - Jack Nicklaus (2001)

The Nicklaus course at Carlton Woods has become a championship stage: since 2023 it has hosted The Chevron Championship, the LPGA's first major of the year. Nicklaus opened it in 2001 in the forests of The Woodlands, north of Houston - big, bold, tournament-grade golf with water guarding the finish. It leads a deep Houston-area private bench that puts three clubs in this top 20.

#9

TPC San Antonio (Oaks Course)

Resort
San Antonio - Greg Norman (2010) - Green fee around $300 (resort guests)

The highest-ranked Texas course most golfers can actually play - if they book the right hotel. Greg Norman, with Sergio Garcia consulting, carved the Oaks Course through the Hill Country canyons north of San Antonio in 2010, and it has hosted the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open ever since. The fairways run narrow between unforgiving live oaks, and access is limited to club members and guests of the JW Marriott San Antonio.

#10

Black Jack's Crossing

Resort
Lajitas - Lanny Wadkins (2011) - Green fee $295

Golfweek ranks Black Jack's Crossing the No. 1 public-access course in Texas, and the setting does half the arguing: Lanny Wadkins threaded emerald fairways through the desert along the Rio Grande at Lajitas, with mesas for backdrops and Big Bend country in every direction. It is a long way from anywhere, and that is the point - stay at Lajitas Golf Resort, play the round, then watch the light change on the river bluffs.

The Next Ten

Nos. 11-20: still elite company. Five are private clubs with more than a century of history between them, but the five you can book - Fields Ranch East, Memorial Park, Pine Dunes, The Rawls Course, and Barton Creek - include a PGA Tour venue and two of the best value rounds in the South.

#11

Brook Hollow Golf Club

Private
Dallas - A.W. Tillinghast (1920)

A 1920 Tillinghast original in the heart of Dallas, its greens reworked by Perry Maxwell and the whole place carefully restored by Keith Foster - a fixture near the top of every panel's Texas private list.

#12

Champions Golf Club (Cypress Creek)

Private
Houston - Ralph Plummer (1957)

Founded by tour legends Jimmy Demaret and Jack Burke Jr. - the Cypress Creek course hosted the 1967 Ryder Cup and the 1969 U.S. Open, and the club's locker-room culture is pure golf history.

#13

Boot Ranch

Private
Fredericksburg - Hal Sutton (2006)

Hal Sutton's Hill Country retreat outside Fredericksburg - spring-fed creeks, dramatic elevation, and a private-club polish that anchors the Fredericksburg golf scene.

#14

Escondido Golf & Lake Club

Private
Horseshoe Bay - Tom Fazio (2006)

Fazio's private Lake LBJ club: immaculate conditioning, a lakeside setting, and a members-only gate a short boat ride from the Horseshoe Bay Resort crowds.

#15

Preston Trail Golf Club

Private
Dallas - Byron Nelson and Ralph Plummer (1965)

Byron Nelson helped design it on White Rock Creek in 1965 and called it home for decades - still one of the most private, tradition-bound memberships in American golf.

#16

Fields Ranch East (Omni PGA Frisco)

Resort
Frisco - Gil Hanse (2023)

Gil Hanse's championship course at the PGA of America's Frisco headquarters - it hosted the 2023 Senior PGA Championship and the 2025 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, with a PGA Championship ahead in 2027. Resort-guest green fees start at $252.

#17

Memorial Park Golf Course

Public
Houston - John Bredemus, restored by Tom Doak (2019)

Houston's beloved municipal course, reborn in Tom Doak's 2019 restoration and now a PGA Tour stop (the Texas Children's Houston Open). The best value in Texas golf: residents play it for $38, non-residents for $140.

#18

Pine Dunes Resort & Golf Club

Public
Frankston - Jay Morrish (2001)

Morrish hid a Scotland-flavored, sand-based layout in the East Texas pines outside Frankston. Golf Digest once named it America's top affordable golf resort, and green fees still start at $59.

#19

The Rawls Course at Texas Tech

Public
Lubbock - Tom Doak (2003)

Doak manufactured a wind-blasted links out of flat Caprock cotton land for Texas Tech in 2003 - regularly ranked the best college campus course in America, and open to everyone.

#20

Omni Barton Creek (Fazio Canyons)

Resort
Austin - Tom Fazio (1999)

The stronger of Barton Creek's two Fazio courses - Hill Country canyons, limestone outcrops, and creek carries, bookable through the resort minutes from downtown Austin.

Honorable Mentions

The Club at Houston Oaks, Miramont, the Vaquero Club, Maridoe Golf Club, Austin Country Club, the GC of Houston Tournament Course, Cowboys Golf Club, La Cantera (The Resort Course), Fields Ranch West, TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course, Summit Rock, and Briggs Ranch all have genuine claims to a spot - on another panel's ballot, several of them make the cut.
